Assuring Bridge Safety and
Serviceability Scanning Tour (UK)
LUSAS was pleased to be asked to organize and host
Day 3 of
the recent Assuring Bridge Safety and Serviceability (ABSS)
International Scanning Tour to the United Kingdom. This was held at the Institution of Civil Engineers, London on 12th June 2009 and featured presentations from LUSAS, the UK’s Highways Agency, from
consultant Atkins, and software supplier Bestech Systems.
The purpose of this international
scanning tour was to identify best practices and processes for
consideration by U.S. engineers to put these approaches into
practice in the U.S. The scan focused on the following areas:

- Refined Analysis - Design,
Construction, and Operations
The meeting
on Day 3 of the UK tour provided the United States ABSS delegation with a good overview of
the background to, and developments, benefits, trends and
real-life applications of state-of-the-art software for analysing
and designing bridges in the UK with particular respect to the forthcoming compulsory use of Eurocodes for bridge design throughout the European region.
