Modelling with LUSAS
LUSAS
Bridge has an easy to use, associative Modeller for modelling
and results processing and a fully integrated Solver which can be used
independently if required. A comprehensive set of menus, dialogues,
tool bars, buttons and forms are supported by a set of modelling and
results processing wizards. On-line help is
available.
Models are created using feature-based
methods and wizards are provided for specific bridge applications.
Model attributes such as thickness, material, etc. can be named
explicitly, and as they are defined they are displayed in a Treeview.
They can then be assigned to selected geometry of the model using the
"drag and drop" technique.
Built-in associativity ensures that if
the model geometry is amended, all assigned loadings, supports and
other attributes are automatically moved to suit. A multi-level undo/redo
facility allows quick modelling corrections to be made.
Boolean operations allow complex geometry to be defined by combining, subtracting
or intersecting existing Surfaces or Volumes.
Surfaces representing holes can be inserted into an existing surface
and any mesh arrangement will be automatically adjusted around the
inserted opening.
Fleshing (the visualisation of
assigned geometric properties) helps ensure that the geometric
thicknesses and eccentricities of slabs and the orientation of beam members
are correctly defined.
Layers and Windows
Models are formed of layers where the visibility
and properties of each layer can be controlled and accessed via the
layer name which is held in the Treeview. As the model is built up,
model features may be grouped together and manipulated to speed up
data preparation or to enable parts of the model to be temporarily
hidden.
Multiple graphical windows allow simultaneous
displays of different parts of the model at different orientations.
An OpenGL implementation
provides fast graphical displays.
Modifications made in one window are automatically updated in other
views. Powerful cursor selection, full pan and zoom and dynamic
rotation allows for easy viewing of your model.
Model Building Wizards
The grillage wizard, which requires the input of
only a few parameters, enables you to rapidly generate a wide variety
of orthogonal, skewed and curved grillage arrangements. An allowance
for cracked sections is also included.

Property Libraries
Libraries of section
properties for a variety of standard sections including UK, US, EU, Korean,
Australian and Canadian steel sections are provided. Other standard sections and user defined
sections can be added with a section property calculator providing
section property data for any arbitrary section. A library of common material
properties are included and others can be user-defined.
Precast Beam Section Generator
A precast beam section
generator produces 2D cross sectional models of country-specifc precast concrete beams including
United Kingdom Y, YE, TY, TYE, SY, M, UM, and U beam types, US AASHTO
Type II to VI beams, Florida Bulb T beams, and Canadian NU Girders. The option for including the contribution from a slab is
provided so that the section properties required in a grillage model
can be obtained.
Desktop Integration and Customisation
The user interface is a full native Windows
98/NT/2000/XP implementation providing an Open Interface to ActiveX
compliant Windows software such as Excel, Access, Word and other
engineering software. Customisation of menus, toolbars and dialogues
and the ability to create your own wizards with Visual Basic Scripting
provide limitless potential to tailor the system to your specific
requirements.
