How to install LUSAS from the CD

It is mandatory that on all operating systems with restricted 'administration rights' (NT/2000/XP), a user with FULL administration rights carries out the installation as set out below.  Attempting to install LUSAS without administrative rights will result in errors. Contact your IT department if you are unsure.

When you install the LUSAS software, the set-up program will ask for a licence key or "serial number".  The licence key you should enter depends on the type of licence(s) you have purchased, current options being:

single user (dongle) licence
single user licence, tied to an ethernet or hard disk ID
network (floating) licence

After receiving a key or setting up a network licence, installation of LUSAS should be carried out as follows:-

  1. Insert the installation CD-ROM into CD drive on the PC.

  2. Exit any applications you are running.  Open Windows Explorer.

  3. Run (double-click) the file <CDdrive>:\Setup.exe on the installation CD-ROM.

  4. Read the Welcome screen, then click the Next button.

  5. Enter the details requested. In the box entitled 'Serial Number' insert the 25-character licence key code supplied by your LUSAS distributor, or the appropriate code for a network licence, then click the Next button.

  6. Specify a directory in which to install the LUSAS software, then click Next.  By default, the installation will not overwrite any previous major versions of the software (i.e. 13.2 or 13.3) currently loaded on the PC.

  7. Choose a Typical [recommended option], Compact or Custom installation.  A typical installation will install the components of the software currently validated by your licence key (entered in step 5).  You may choose to install the files for other components by choosing a Custom installation.  Click Next.

  8. Specify a Program folder (this is where the program icons will be displayed in the Windows Start Menu).  By default, the installation should not overwrite any icons for previous versions of the software currently loaded on the PC.

  9. Verify that the displayed settings for the installation are correct, then click Next (or use the Back button if you need to go back and make changes).

  10. LUSAS will be installed.

  11. You will be offered the option to install Adobe Acrobat Reader.  To enable full access to the documentation, you should ensure that this is installed if it is not already available on the PC.

  12. You will be offered the option to review and edit the default systems settings for LUSAS v13.4. We recommend that users click YES and attend to the following points:

  • On the 'Key information' tab, the keys listed can include as many 25-character license codes as have been issued.  It is permissible to include keys for all dongles and PCs currently licenced, as this will simplify the task of transferring the FEA.KEY file to other workstations.  The 25-character LUSAS keys should be entered first, followed by 24-character keys activating certain options in the software.  Network installations should refer to [SENTINELLM].  The network key is installed separately.

  • On the 'Disk usage information' tab, check that LUSAS Modeller & LUSAS Solver temporary file locations indicate valid directories which are available to all users that will run LUSAS on the PC.  By default, following the Windows convention, the default directories may not be available to all users, and so should be modified to something suitable

On Windows XP, once installation is complete, LUSAS Modeller must be started whilst still logged in as Administrator to register the LUSAS libraries.  As soon as it has successfully started, it may be immediately closed.  If this step is not completed, other users will be unable to run LUSAS, obtaining an error message saying "Unable to find type library, run program again".

Any modelling and analysis capabilities described on this page are dependent upon the LUSAS software product and version in use.
