Typical warning message from LUSAS Solver text output file (*.OUT):

***WARNING*** NONLINEAR SOLUTIONS ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR xxxx ELEMENTS (OVL66 PROCESSOR)

Most common causes & links to solutions

The element referred to in this warning message is not formulated to handle nonlinear performance (say GNL). Other elements in the model may well be suitable for nonlinear analysis.  The particular element referred to can be used in the analysis if a nonlinear solution is not required for the part of the structure that these elements are used for, and it will behave linearly. Other elements in the model can still perform nonlinearly if they are suitable. If a nonlinear solution is required for the part of structure meshed with these linear elements then an alternative element, that supports the particular type of nonlinear behaviour required, should be specified instead. For details of the elements available in LUSAS, please see:

Considering a particular example of this warning message:

***WARNING*** NONLINEAR SOLUTIONS ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR BMS3 ELEMENTS (OVL66 PROCESSOR)

In this case the Nonlinear 3D Thick Beam element BTS3 could be used. This element has constant forces and moments along its length, compared to the 3D Thick Beam Element BMS3 which has a quadratic variation of moments and is therefore more accurate with fewer elements. If you need to use the Nonlinear 3D Thick Beam element BTS3 then you will need to carry out a mesh refinement study and determine a suitable mesh to obtain more accurate results.
